Descriptions of Classes:
- Dances from the Gresley Manuscript - Katharine von Regensburg
-
- Galliards - Lady Freydís in tryggva Sigurðardóttir
-
A lively, airborne dance that isn't nearly as hard as it looks. SCA dance experience helpful but not necessary. Class will focus on basic cinque pas and variations such as the bell step. Now you will never have to disappoint your partner by leaving the floor after the pavane!
- Beginning English Country Dance - Thegn Grimmund Blackwing
-
- Gavotte - Katharine von Regensburg
-
Arbeau's "Gavotte" is part bransle, part galliard, and all fun. Beginners are welcome (no experience, not even of bransles or galliards, is needed) but more experienced dancers should still find a challenge. Kissing will be strictly optional.
- Beginning Italian Rennaisance Dance - Adele Desfontaines
-
Super fun, super easy dances written down by Italian dance masters! At
a bare minimum, Petit Vriens from the 15th century and La Castellana
from the 16th century will be taught. Given time, we'll also learn
Amoroso and the hunting game from La Caccia d'Amore.
- "Beg your Pardon, Monsieur Arbeau, Master Playford?" - Lord Galeran Chanterel
-
Arbeau's and Playford's dances as written in Orchesography and the English
Dancing Master have been part of the Society's repertoire and culture for
over 30 years, and in that time our execution of those dances has undergone
considerable change. This class invites the participants to return to the
original source and to determine how current practice may differ from the
original instructions. Given a recording of the music as originally
specified and either a translation of one of Arbeau's dances (with the
title blacked-out) or a facsimile of a page from Playford, the class will
determine which dance is being described, reconstruct the step sequence and
attempt to dance it as written. Basic familiarity with dancing in the SCA
will be helpful to the participants but is by no means required.
