The Society for Creative Anachronism (SCA) is a non-profit educational organization devoted to the study of pre-seventeenth century cultures. Most participants narrow their research to Europe in the middle or renaissance ages, but many extend their interests to the Middle and Far East. Once a member has chosen a time period and a culture, he or she strives to recreate the appropriate arts and skills.
Since the goal of the SCA is to recreate the Middle Ages "as they could have been", we do not limit our research to specific areas. Some of the areas of study are:
Agriculture, Archery, Armoring, Bardic Recitation, Basketry, Book Binding, Bow Making, Brewing, Calligraphy, Candle Making, Cooking, Costuming & Accessories, Dancing, Drama & Comedy, Drawing, Dyeing, Embroidery, Falconry, Fighting, Gaming, Glass Blowing, Heraldry, Herbalism, Horn Working, Horsemanship, Horticulture, Husbandry, Illumination, Instrumental Music, Jewelry, Juggling, Lace making, Lapidary, Leather Working, Languages, Masonry, Masquing & Mime, Mathematics, Medicine, Merchanting, Metal Working, Musical Composition, Musical Instrument Making, Needlework, Newsletters & Publications, Painting, Paper Making, Pavilion Making, Period Fencing, Philosophy, Poetry, Pottery, Riddles, Rug Making, Scribing, Sculpture, Spinning, Tanning, Tool Making, Toy Making, Tumbling, Vinting, Vocal Music, Weapon Smithing, Weaving, Woodworking...
and there are many more where they came from.
An important fact about the SCA to remember is that this is our hobby and as such we are doing it, ultimately, to have fun. After hearing about all of the research, study and work, it doesn't sound like there would be much fun involved, but you would be surprised. I have found few things more enjoyable than a day of activities such as fighting, archery, or shopping followed by an evening of feasting, singing, and dancing.
In honesty, I have never found words that can truly define the SCA. It is always changing and reshaping itself through the interactions of its members. The only thing that doesn't change is the dedication to Chivalry, Courtesy, and Knowledge that we share.
